How AI works in Dávka

In Dávka, AI only helps you log food. It never gives health advice and saves nothing without your confirmation.

Version 2026-10-v1Effective from

In short

  • AI meal recognition is optional and only works with your explicit consent.
  • It only helps you log food: it estimates items and nutritional values from a photo, a label or a description.
  • It gives no advice about health, medicines or doses.
  • The photo or text is not kept after processing and is not used to train AI.
  • The result is an estimate. It is saved only after you review and confirm it.

What AI does in Dávka

  • Meal photo: recognizes the individual items on your plate and estimates the portion and approximate nutritional values.
  • Nutrition label photo: reads the values from the table on the package, for example when a product can’t be found by its barcode.
  • Meal description: turns text you type or dictate (for example, “two rolls with ham and a coffee with milk”) into individual items with estimated values.

In the app, results are labeled as AI estimates. Before they are saved to your journal, you can edit or discard them.

What AI does not do

  • It does not answer questions about health, medicines, doses, symptoms or body weight.
  • It does not judge your food or eating habits and does not set calorie or other targets.
  • It saves nothing without your confirmation and makes no decisions for you.
  • It must not be used to calculate insulin or other medicine doses.

If a request concerns health, the app shows a fixed message recommending that you talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If the text suggests that you are unwell or in distress, the app shows you where to find professional help. These messages are written in advance and are the same for everyone; they are not generated by AI.

Before a photo, label or description is sent for the first time, the app shows a separate consent screen. If you choose “Not now”, nothing is sent, and you can keep logging food manually or by barcode. You can withdraw consent at any time in your Profile, under Privacy & data, with the AI meal recognition switch; the app then sends no further requests.

Consent wording, version ai-2026-10-v1:

AI meal recognition

When you use AI recognition, we send your meal photo, label photo or meal description, encrypted, via our server in Czechia to OpenRouter (USA) and to an AI model provider that processes it in the EU (currently Google or Mistral AI). Because a meal description can relate to your health, we need your explicit consent. Transfers to the USA are protected by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. We only use zero-data-retention mode: the photo or text is not kept after processing and is not used to train AI. We never send your name, email or account ID. The result is only an estimate: check it before saving and never use it to calculate medicine doses. You can withdraw consent at any time in your Profile, under Privacy & data.

Where your data goes

  1. Your phone reduces the photo and strips its metadata, such as location.
  2. Our server in Czechia checks your consent and the daily limit. It does not store the photo or text and does not write them to its operational logs.
  3. OpenRouter, Inc. (USA) passes the request to an AI model provider. We only allow providers that do not keep inputs after processing and do not use them for training (zero data retention). Currently these are Google (Vertex AI) and Mistral AI, both processing in the EU.
  4. The result is returned only to your phone.

We never send your name, email, account identifier or IP address to OpenRouter or the model provider. Under its data processing agreement, OpenRouter has committed to deleting inputs and outputs once the request has been handled, except where retention is required by law or to protect the service against abuse. Transfers to the USA are governed by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Details are in our Privacy Policy.

Accuracy

AI estimates based on what it can see in the photo or read in the description. It can get the type of food, the portion size or hidden ingredients such as oil or sugar wrong. For labels, it reads the printed values, but it can make mistakes there too. Always check and adjust the result. Do not rely on it for health decisions.

Limits and availability

AI meal recognition needs an internet connection and has a daily usage limit. When you reach it, the app lets you know, and you can log the meal manually. The feature may occasionally be unavailable, for example during a provider outage.

How we choose AI

We choose models based on accuracy and privacy. We only switch to providers that meet the same conditions, meaning zero-data-retention processing. Every change is reflected in this document and in our Privacy Policy.

Wrong result?

If AI gets it completely wrong, email us at podpora@davkapp.com and tell us what happened. Please don’t send photos or health information.
